Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality
AFR 155 Introduction to Black Women’s Studies (4 Credits)
This course examines historical, critical and theoretical perspectives on the development of Black feminist theory/praxis. The course draws from the 19th century to the present, but focuses on the contemporary Black feminist intellectual tradition that achieved notoriety in the 1970s and initiated a global debate on Western and global feminisms. Central to our exploration is the analysis of the intersectional relationship between theory and practice, and of race, to gender and class. We conclude the course with the exploration of various expressions of contemporary Black feminist thought around the globe as a way of broadening our knowledge of feminist theory. {S}

Executive Summary
On March 28, 2022, the Florida Legislature passed HB 1557, the “Parental Rights in Education” bill, also dubbed the Don’t Say Gay bill. This bill prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity before the 4th grade and requires such instruction to be “age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate” thereafter. Many are concerned that the bill will not only consequence in restricted or nonexistent education about the living of diverse sexual and gender identities, but it will result in a chilly or hostile college climate for LGBTQ educators, students, and families because it suggests that something is wrong with LGBTQ identities. Based on surveys of 113 LGBTQ+ parents, this study represents a first look at how HB 1557 is negatively affecting LGBTQ+ parent families in the state. Almost 9 out of 10 (88%) LGBTQ+ parents are very or somewhat concerned about the impact that HB 1557 will hold on them and their children, with one in four reporting they contain experienced anti-LGBTQ harassment since the law was passed and one in five reporting becoming less
FIU & Beyond LGBTQIA+ Resources & Services
Given the growing recognition of the rights of LGBTIQ individuals, and the rejection of discrimination based upon sexuality, our certificate enables students to better understand the complexity of sexuality, the affects of legal and institutional discrimination, and the experiences of those who reside non-normative sexual and gender lives. The Certificate in Queer Studies is also designed to fulfill the mission and vision of Florida International University, “as a an urban, multi-campus, public research university serving its students and the diverse population of South Florida.” Therefore, the Certificate places the study of sexual and gender minorities in a global context, and thus will be an important component in the university’s commitment to global leaning.
Understanding sexuality and its many manifestations is crucial in navigating issues on a local, national, and global scale. The Certificate in Queer Studies will give students at FIU an important lead as humane and inclusive global citizens. The Certificate in Queer Studies fills a particularly acute want both at FIU and in Miami. The University of Florid
