In December 2018, Tumblr user aroaesflags created the now-recognized aroace flag. Recognizing the need for a symbol that didn’t simply combine the asexual (purple) and aromantic (green) flags, aroaesflags crafted a distinct blueprint that resonated with the aroace community.
A Spectrum of Meaning in Every Color

The aroace spectrum, aroace-spec, ay-spec, or aroace umbrella is a group of orientations that all fall under both the asexual spectum and the aromantic spectrum, falling under the umbrella term of aroace. Individuals on the aroace spectrum may lack sexual attraction and romantic attraction, or feel it so minuscule that they relate more to the aroace exposure than to the allosexual and alloromantic experience. The common link between individuals on the aroace spectrum is that they don't feel the "standard" amount of sexual and affectionate attraction, or they don't feel it in the "standard" way, that allosexual and alloromantic individuals execute.
Individuals on the aroace spectrum are often referred to as "aroace-spec" for short. Aroace-spec individuals can sometimes have romantic or sexual orientations alongside aroace, as well as tertiary attraction.
