Northern Kentucky Food Truck On The Defense After Unveiling Recent T-Shirt

GRANT COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– A Northern Kentucky food truck is selling merchandise that has brought them a lot of criticism.

The shirts twist the acronym for LGBTQ, as if the letters stood for Liberty, Guns, Bible, Trump, and BBQ.

After Belle’s Smokin’ Barbecue owner Jamie Smith advertised the modern shirts in a social media publish on Thursday, the blowback was swift. Many commented that the shirts were hateful and offensive.

One commenter noted that the LGBTQ people has had a mountain to ascend in terms of acceptance and that “the last thing we need is a food truck mocking us.” Another commenter accused the business of bigotry.

Chris Hartman, the Executive Director of the Fairness Campaign tells LEX 18 that these are the type of messages that make LGBTQ youths feel isolated.

“It isolates not just members of the LGBTQ community, but also their family, friends, co-workers, and loved ones. These are the types of messages LGBTQ kids see that make them touch isolated and that they won’t be accepted in their community,” said Hartman.

A Kentucky barbecue joint is facing serious blowback after some of their merchandise has been deemed inappropriate and offensive to the LGBTQ community.

Belle's Smoking BBQ, which operates out of a food truck based in Williamstown, Ky., promoted their new t-shirts on social media this week, which are emblazoned with the slogan, "I support LGBTQ - Liberty, Guns, Bible, Trump, BBQ."

Many were fast to respond in the comments, calling the misappropriation of the "lesbian, queer, bisexual, transgender and queer" slogan bigoted and harmful.

“I posted the shirt for new swag and it just went out of hand and it got blowed up,” Belle's Smoking BBQ owner Jamie Smith told Fox 19. He added that even before advertising the shirts on Facebook, he had sold about 100 of the shirts.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Kentucky -- A BBQ business in Kentucky is taking heat for using the acronym LGBTQ. The obstacle is, in this instance, those letters don't withstand for what they usually do and some people find the underlying letter offensive.

Belle's Smokin BBQ began promoting a T-shirt with the words "I Help LGBTQ: 'Liberty, Guns, Bible, Trump and BBQ.'

"I posted the shirt today for new swag and it just went out of hand and it got blown up," said the restaurant's owner Jamie Smith. He's been traveling all over the state bringing his food to crowds for the past three years.

The post quickly went viral with many people sending messages of their own like: "simple bigotry. Sad commentary for business. Good luck going broke!"

Smith took down the word and replaced it with a statement, saying in part: "We apologize if we have offended any groups of people, organizations or individuals with our shirts. We respect all beliefs and lifestyles and want no ill will towards anyone."

Smith says he started selling the T-shirts nearly two years ago.

“I found the acronym on Facebook and I just added the Q,” he said.

LGBTQ is widely acknowledged to stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and questioning or queer.

Smith says he has sold nearly a 100 but decided to advertise it on Facebook on Thursday to receive more sales.
