CANDIDATES, MODERATOR IGNORE Authentic LGBTQ ISSUES OPTING TO INJECT TRANSPHOBIA AND DISINFORMATION INTO GOP DEBATE

(Thursday, December 7, 2023) GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual person, transgender, and gay (LGBTQ) media activism organization responds to last night’s Republican presidential primary debate in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Candidates included Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chris Christie.

In advance of the debate, GLAAD sent a letter to moderators Megyn Kelly, Elizabeth Vargas (NewsNation), and Eliana Johnson (The Washington Free Beacon). The letter encouraged moderators to involve pressing LGBTQ issues in the debate, and suggested questions, included below.

Candidates and moderator Megyn Kelly amplified falsehoods about LGBTQ people and laws targeting them:

  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis attempted to contrast himself with former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, claiming a bill he signed banning mainstream health care for transgender people would stop the “gender mutilation of minors,” an inflammatory and false characterization of health care backed by every major medical association. DeSantis claimed Haley opposed the law.

Anti-LGBTQ+ Candidates Set Sights on the White Residence From Rubbing Elbows With Hate Groups to Targeting Trans Youth and People Living With HIV, Receive Up to Speed on These Extremists’ Dangerous and Abhorrent Records

The presidential candidates on the far right are failing to learn from obvious mistakes.

Given last year’s defeat of extremists politicians across the country, any logical rearview reflection by those entering next year’s presidential race would convey a demand to dial back on anti-choice, anti-Black, anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. However, six months ahead of the Iowa caucuses, far right candidates have returned, swinging back harder, sowing dread and division in direct to animate the most extreme elements of their base.

So far in 2023, over 570 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been proposed in statehouses nationwide, with 80 of them now enacted into law. When coupling these unprecedented threats with anti-LGBTQ+ attacks from Congress and vows from presidential candidates to get these efforts across the accomplish line, there is simply far too much at stake for any of us to sit on the sidelines in the coming election.

What Nikki Haley has said about politicians' mental competency, abortion, foreign policy and more

Nikki Haley, a former U.N. ambassador and governor of South Carolina now running for president, believes she's gaining momentum.

Haley has said her campaign received a boost after her performance in the first Republican primary debate, last month, and a FiveThirtyEight/Washington Post/Ipsos survey also showed likely GOP voters gave her high marks based on what they saw.

Adding to the momentum was a poll released by CNN last week that found -- even though the general election is still 14 months away -- Haley was the only major GOP candidate to beat President Joe Biden in a hypothetical matchup: 49% to his 43%.

Nonetheless, she is still polling in the first in the single digits nationally, according to FiveThirtyEight, far behind front-runner Donald Trump. She is faring little better in most polls of key prior voting states like Iowa.

She has touted the poll against Biden.

"The majority of Americans don't want to see a rematch between Trump and Biden," she said on "State of the Union" in response to the CNN poll.

    Her pitch that America necessitate

Whether she's downplayingracism or flippantly pondering the possible meet of President Joe Biden’s death, Nikki Haley seems to understand rote Reaganism won’t win the afternoon among conservatives as it has in years past. So she’s upped the extremism.

The 2024 Republican presidential candidate has been laggingbehind her biggest GOP principal competitors in polling for months and appears desperate to capture a news cycle. And, for Republicans, what better way to earn her one than numbskulled cruelty?

This is what viewers got Sunday during CNN's town hall with Haley, in which she appeared to baselessly suggest transgender student-athletes are to blame for suicidal ideation among teen girls. She claimed that gender non-conforming kids' playing sports is “the women’s issue of our time.”

Seriously. She actually said that. The Supreme Court effectively stole bodily autonomy from millions of women last year by overturning the constitutional right to abortion and allowing states to ban abortion, including in cases of rape or incest. Along with that, Haley’s former boss and the current standard-bearer of her party, Donald Trump, was just found civilly liable for sexually assaultingand later defaming a wom

Human Rights Campaign’s LGBTQ ‘Emergency’ Is All about Capital and Politics

The basis for HRC’s dismay is the enactment into commandment of more than 75 bills it opposed in articulate legislatures, a much bigger crop than usual.

The great majority of these laws relate to trans issues, mostly as they arise among minors and in schools.

For my part, I agree with HRC’s position on some of these bills.

Florida enacted a micromanaging set of bathroom rules that — if they get enforced, which seems unlikely — will hassle many unoffending persons just trying to travel about their lives.

Tennessee passed a rule limiting public drag-show performances that was almost instantly blocked by a conservative federal judge as an unconstitutional restriction on expression.

Clearly, states are taking more actions in this area that are dumb, illiberal or coercive.

Missouri’s attorney general recently issued a decree meant to restrict gender surgery undertaken by fully grown-up adults, not just minors.

All that said, I long for HRC would concede that there are legitimate debates about many transgender-related issues — on matters such as sports competition, intimate privacy, prison management and how, when and
