17 year-old Cressida Anness Lorenz explains the origins of modern-day slang in queer subculture

You might have heard of ‘slay’, ‘tea’, ‘shade’ and ‘queen’… but do you realize where they originate from?

Gen Z and millennials employ these terms, in a variety of situations, from complimenting and hyping up their peers to expressing disrespect or disgust. But few seem to actually know where this slang came from.

Internet personality Adam Aleksic – known by his social media deal with ‘etymologynerd’ – commented on this phenomenon in an Instagram video. He observed examples of this recent increase, with the words ‘serve’ and ‘slay’, commonly used as words of encouragement.

A comprehensive guide to Gen Alpha slang

A family friend showed me a chic new outfit they had planned for winter. I responded, saying that it was a “slay,” which many will recognize as meaning that the outfit was wonderful. The word rang through the room, turning every head under ten years old.

'That's so camp': Defining the slang and aesthetic term, plus its place in queer history

"Camp" is a term many know but scant can define. You may have heard it as slang adopted by Gen Z or in context with the 2019Met Gala theme, but it has a much deeper history, particularly in queer communities.

What does camp mean?

Camp is an aesthetic or expression of “inauthentic visual cues,” says Michael Mamp, an associate professor of Lousiana State University’s fashion program and the director and curator of the university’s textile and costume museum.
