David, I am really sorry if you felt wronged by what supposedly was said or done and how it made you feel.

Fr. White has always been truly prefer Jesus to me and my entire family, no matter sexuality or sins for us during our daily lives, tragedies, and triumphs. We have recognizable him for years and he has only been the most loving public figure in our church and helped multiple family members arrive back to God and the church, no matter what kind of sinner we are. He has never passed judgment on us but only loved and guided us in our faith journeys. He is very well loved and I expect and pray this story does not hurt him because the damage it may cause to those who rotate to him will last a very long time. Everything I have ever heard about him from students, etc has always been words of value and kindness. To love the sinner and hate the sin.

I will pray for you, Father Pale, and the person that shared this with you especially because it caused all this hurt.

David Begnaud is the lead national correspondent for "CBS Mornings."  This is his personal story about the teacher who became his mentor and life-long friend.

It's been 25 years since I met the woman who changed the route of my animation. Josette Cook Surratt was an English teacher at Teurlings Catholic High College in 1998, and I was a 15-year-old freshman who was gay at a time when that was not readily accepted. I also had been diagnosed with Tourette's, which was also not well-understood at the time.

It was a lot of baggage for this young kid. But Ms. Surratt had a way of seeing beyond the surface — into my soul, really.

Surratt said she saw the wall I had up.

"I saw the wall. I saw the defensiveness. I saw the wrath and frustration," she said when I recently visited her at my senior high school in Lafayette, Louisiana. "I didn't want that to impede on any of the things that he deserved."

I felt drawn to Surratt and her teaching approach, which combined a no-nonsense approach and uplifting manner. I wasn't exactly at the head of the class, but my deep voice distinguished me among students, and soon Surratt, the top coach of the sc

Out CBS reporter says admins at his Louisiana Catholic school wanted to retain his interview with English teacher who helped him understand his sexuality and Tourette's in the closet so today's students 'didn't get the impression that being gay is OK'

A prominent reporter has claimed administrators at his former high school sought to pull a segment about their institution due to his sexuality.

David Begnaud - the lead national correspondent for CBS Mornings - made the claim in an opinion piece published Wednesday, alleging anti-gay discrimination.

The column centered around Teurlings Catholic High School in Louisiana, and in it, the 40-year-old journalist wrote of how the administrators made him feel unwelcome when he sought to film a flattering highlight on a former teacher.

Aired in September, the segment surrounded how that staffer - longtime English instructor Josette Surratt - had helped him through his prepubescent struggles with his sexuality, as well as bouts with bullying and Tourette Syndrome.

He says it's because the private institution didn’t want its students to think his sexuality was acceptable.
