Joshua Bassett’s baptism illustrates Diverse Christians’ bait-and-switch experiences
Video of openly gay actor Joshua Bassett’s recent baptism at Bethel Church, a prominent conservative evangelical megachurch in Redding, Calif., set off competing responses — including Basset’s.
Conservative Christians — who hailed Bassett’s public utterance of faith as an example they hoped many other young people would follow — celebrated the video across social media. However, when word circulated the church where Bassett was baptized is well-known for its anti-LGBTQ+ stances and conversion therapy program, Bassett responded in an Instagram comment. “I was unaware of all of the views of this church and disagree with some of them,” he posted, before reiterating his heart is “with Christ alone.”
Hip environments
Churches such as the one where Bassett was baptized have grown in popularity because of their hip environments, amazing music and many high-profile celebrities endorsing their letter of hope in a chaotic world.

Joshua Bassett says he is part of LGBTQ people – but he's 'anti-coming out'
Joshua Bassett is providing clarity on his reality – even if he's avoiding labels surrounding his sexuality.
The 20-year-old actor and singer has been the center of internet speculation of him "coming out" after calling Harry Styles hot. But in an interview with GQ published Thursday, Bassett is clearing things up: "I’m delighted to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community."
After his admiration for Styles went viral, Bassett took to Instagram to inspire people to love who they love and sent a message of assurance to those still "figuring (their sexuality) out."
But the "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" actor didn't use the opportunity to express how he personally identified his sexuality because he didn't find it necessary.
"I am anti-coming out in the sense that there’s no need to," Bassett told GQ. “People are welcome to have boxes if they want them.”

Nearly two years ago, same-sex attracted Disney star Joshua Bassett was the talk of the town after organism baptized at a Bethel Chuch service. Within days he hosted a pop-up religious show in LA where he played worship songs, gave a mini-sermonette to fans in attendance, and shared his testimony, giving thanks to “my savior, Jesus Christ,” at the Kids’ Choice Awards.
After his baptism hit the media, many of his fans lamented the news and expressed concern over Bethel church’s anti-LGBTQ theology, prompting Bassett to clarify that he strongly condemned gay conversion therapy and wasn’t aware of Bethel’s stance on it before being baptized there.
Though many took his testimony and declared with absolute certainty that Bassett was saved, we insisted that all the usual cautions should apply. The evangelical landscape is littered with celebrities that believers have been burned on, desperately pointing to every little morsel and scrap of religiosity as some vindication for their faith, and as a result nothing should be assumed.
Still, we enjoined folks to be hopeful that he’d been saved and and that the Lord would be patient with him as he begins the messy process of sanctification, inclu
Joshua Bassett Opens Up About His Sexuality and the Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter Love Triangle
Joshua Bassett wants to translate his feelings to music, à la Olivia Rodrigo. In an interview with GQ, the 20-year-old High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actor reflects on how his 18-year-old co-star and rumored ex wowed with her breakup anthem-filled debut album, Sour, which is thought by many to be about their split.
"[It's an artist's position to] carry the feeling weight for other people. That's what's so great about Olivia's album," Bassett says. "She was able to articulate the feelings that she felt in a way that works on behalf of other people. I haven’t been able to tackle any of it. I’ll get support to it."
"... I've had a tough time writing just because it's been so painful," he adds. "I've had a hard period facing it in the way that I need to."
Before Sour made Rodrigo a celebrity, she and Bassett were cast alongside one another in the Disney+ series. Their chemistry, Bassett says, was instant.
"It was very evident, in my belief, that she was the perfect one for it," he says of Nini,
