Billy Porter Talks Challenges Of Being Black And Same-sex attracted In Hollywood

Emmy Award-winning Pose actor Billy Porter said when he tried to break into Hollywood in the 1980s, the industry was only looking for three types of African American actors — “James Earl Jones, the patriarch. Denzel Washington, the sex symbol, or genius clown, Eddie Murphy.”

Porter was none of the above, he told the audience Saturday night at the Fresh Yorker Festival in Fresh York City. Yet he persevered.

The Broadway veteran added that his pop melody career was also sidelined back then because he is gay, despite an early deal with A&M Records.

The music industry was “hugely, violently homophobic. It just was never about the music,” Porter said. “It was about trying to fix myself so other people would sense comfortable around me.”

So, “Where am I fitting in?” he asked himself. “I became a character player to hide behind brief weight and work so I could eat,” Porter explained in a wide-ranging interview.

Things got so lousy that he filed for bankruptcy and had no apartment or health insurance for 13 years, he recalled. Then came his stage role a

Among those questions: should queer roles be played exclusively by gender non-conforming actors?

It’s an evolving conversation, getting at the very core of what makes the art of acting, well, acting. Last year, the industry’s resident nice guy Tom Hanks gave an answer in regards to his Oscar-recognized role in 1993’s “Philadelphia.”

Actor Jai Rodriguez has been in the public eye since landing the role of Angel on Broadway in “Rent” in 1997. (photo by Ben Cope)

Jai Rodriguez catapulted onto television screens 20 years ago as one of the original hosts of the show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Now, the seasoned performer is breaking novel ground for male lover performers, and particularly gay performers of color, as he hustles his way into roles across film, television and stage, all in spite of the obstacles put forth by an industry that has historically catered to vertical, white men.

Though he was cast as the “culture guide” of the gay, five-man posse, Rodriguez was decidedly not cultured when the then-24-year-old started out on the Bravo series, he said. A Long Island-native, Rodriguez said he didn’t have much exposure to the outside world growing up in an Evangelical Christian place with his single-parent mother. But even as an adolescent, he had a knack for production, singing in front of 2,500 people regularly at his church. He went to a carrying out arts school starting his junior year, which gave him the opportunity to be tutored by professionals in the industry, who curated the promising amateur’s talent.
