Lgbtq bars in alabama
There are currently twenty-one lesbian-owned bars in the Together States in 2021, down from nearly 200 that existed in the belated 80s. A decline of this stature was unsettling and dumbfounding. Had we digressed in some capacity? Was this some conservative-won plight to eliminate our spaces?
When I first learned this fact from my friend Byrdie O’Connor, the producer of the Queer woman Bar Project, there was an unspoken, I recognize. Can you believe it? between us. I immediately assumed that the majority of the remaining lesbian-owned bars were in Fresh York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, minus A League of Her Control in Washington D.C.. But Brydie shook her chief. Only three in Novel York (Henrietta Hudson, Cubbyhole and Ginger’s), one in San Francisco (Wildside West), none in Los Angeles.
Where are the rest? They’re splattered all over the country, from the Midwest to the South, including a bar called Herz in Mobile, Alabama.
Hearing about Herz sparked a specific curiosity in me. I wanted to know what was keeping it alive, so I got in touch with the women behind the Lesbian Lock Project, and with the owners of Herz.

An Alabama drag show was shut down on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall
The LGBTQ community in Montgomery, Alabama, has been left with more questions than answers after a performative show was shut down by authorities Saturday darkness, during the 50th anniversary weekend of the historic Stonewall uprising.
“We've been running for weeks trying to raise money for a gay club in Montgomery, because we don't possess one,” Victoria A. Jewelle, a local drag queen who serves as the show’s director, told NBC News. “We were trying to raise money for a new establishment so we can have a place to feel safe.”
Officials with Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board canvassed a dozen local bars, restaurants and nightclubs June 29 for what they phone a “minor buy.” Essentially, the board sends a young person under the age of 21 into the establishment to watch if the business will sell alcohol to them. It was assisted in this effort by the Montgomery Police Department and the Montgomery Fire and Rescue, in addition to other agencies.
