Founded more than 400 years ago, Albany is filled with rich history and traditions, beautiful architecture, spectacular events and entertainment venues, amazing restaurants, and a vibrant and active LGBTQ+ community.

A Welcoming Community

Residents, business leaders, group partners, and widespread figures work together to support the LGBTQ+ community in Albany. 

  • The Pride Center of the Capital Region is the oldest continuously operating LGBTQ+ center in the country. Based in Albany, the Self-acceptance Center has been meeting the diverse needs of the LGBTQ+ community since 1970.
  • Learn more about the history of the Pride Center through the Recent York State Museum'sPride exhibit page. In honor of the center's 50th anniversary, the museum composed oral histories from members of the community which resulted in additional panel exhibition the following year which is now available for viewing online.
  • The Pride Center of the Capital Region hosts the Capital Pride Festival, one of the largest celebrations of pride in Upstate New York every June.

    Albany LGBTQ City Guide

    For those who are interested in moving to New York and want a urban area that offers so much to see and perform but on a slightly smaller scale than the Big Apple, Albany might be an excellent selection to consider. It’s the capital city of Recent York, and it’s a city well-known for organism full of opportunity, and for being home to a thriving arts and culture scene, many diverse neighborhoods, and so much to see and undertake. If you’re thinking of finding your next dwelling in New York’s capital city, chances are, you’ll find plenty about it to love!

    A Look at Albany's History

    Albany initially received its name based on the Duke of York’s Scottish title, “Duke of Albany,” as drawn-out ago as 1664 when the English first took control of the area. Despite being named after an Englishman, Albany was primarily Dutch in language and custom until the American Revolution. Albany remains so to this morning and is proud of its reputation as a diverse city full of innovation and opportunity. After the Americans won the revolution and New York was made a express, Albany was named its capital in 1797. The city grew, both because it was the capital and

    Community organizations, business leaders, public figures, and residents work together to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community in the Capital Region. The following organizations work to serve the needs of the community by hosting community groups, Pride events, support services, and offering LGBTQ+ health services.     Pride Center of the Capital Region

    Known as the oldest, continuously operating movement center in the nation, this organization has been serving the needs of the LGBTQ+ community since 1970. The Pride Center is always working to create a safe, inclusive, and affirming space for the community in the Capital Region. They host various events, community groups, and programs throughout the year, including the annual Capital Pride parade and festival — the largest Celebration month celebration in the northeast outside of Modern York City and Boston.
