Kate Brown To Be The Nation’s First Sitting Openly LGBT Governor
by Stephen Peters •
WASHINGTON - Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, responded to the news that Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber will resign effective Wednesday, February 18, and be replaced by Secretary of State Kate Brown, who is openly bisexual. HRC President Chad Griffin issued the following statement:
“Few are better prepared to direct the great state of Oregon than Kate Brown. She's a known commodity to Oregonians with a distinguished record of service of over two decades. And while she'll construct history as the nation's first sitting LGBT governor, the more important reality is that she's supremely capable of leading the state to better days ahead.”
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, multi-attracted and transgender equality. HRC envisions a world where LGBT people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.

Kate Brown is an American politician and attorney. She served as the 38th governor of Oregon from 2015–2023 and was the first openly attracted to both genders one. She has also served in the Oregon House of Representatives, the Oregon Senate, and was the Oregon Secretary of State.
Born on a US Air Force based Torrejón de Ardoz, Spain, where her father was serving as an ophthalmologist, Brown later grew up in Minnesota. She went on to earn her J.D. in environment law from Lewis & Clark College Law School.
Brown made history several times throughout her time in public office. She was the first openly LGBT person elected to the secretary of state in 2008. When she became governor in 2016, she once again made history, this moment as the first openly LGBT governor in the United States.
. @TuckerCarlson , that's what bisexual means. To every bisexual person out there struggling to explain to your friends and family who you are and who you love: you are not alone. Don't let the bullies stop you from being true to yourself. You might even be a governor someday. https://t.co/pUaqJICsld

Brown’s political career began in 1991 – when, as a young lawyer – she was appointed to pack a vacancy in the Oregon Home of Representatives. She was re-elected to the position and later won a seat in the Oregon Senate, where she served as majority leader. In office, Brown has earned the nickname “America’s most evolving governor,” supporting laws to expand voting access, state funding for abortion and investment in universal pre-K.

Kate Brown: US's first LGBT governor has more essential things to worry about
Kate Brown was sworn in as the first openly LGBT governor in the US on Wednesday in a state where the sexual orientation of politicians has long ceased to be an issue. The current speaker of the Oregon house of representatives, Tina Kotek, is a lesbian and Portland’s previous mayor, Sam Adams, is gay.
The fact that the new Democratic governor of Oregon is bisexual is so well known in the state that it has generally only been a footnote, as her predecessor was forced out by an escalating corruption scandal.
But a little more than two decades ago, Brown, 54, lived in fear of her sexuality being made public. She has described being “terrified” that she would misplace her job as a family lawyer if it was discovered she was in a relationship with a woman.
“I was walking on eggshells the whole time. Like I couldn’t be who I am. I’m not free to be myself. It feels like you’re cutting off your legs or your arms. It feels appreciate you can’t be a whole person,” she said in Breaking Through, a documentary about LGBT politicians.
