The 100 Greatest Queer Anthems of All Time
How does a song become a gay anthem? Favor the LGBTQ+ society itself, our soundtrack is vast and diverse. We contain recorded our history and contribution to the culture through music, and with this list we acknowledge and recollect the forerunners that have made doable the positive changes we’ve seen over the decades. These songs are a testimony to our resilience and excellence.
While it’s unfeasible to define exactly what makes a song “gay,” this list definitely isn’t straight. You will see many overlaps between this list and some of the best residence and disco tracks that were blasted in the ballrooms, as well as transformative hits by our beloved big-voiced divas. There are introspective slow jams by queer artists and allies that mirror our struggles with self-acceptance and social rejection. There are Billboard Warm 100-topping sensations and hidden gems that are forgotten or yet to be discovered; instant classics and songs that grew to be our community’s favorites. Besides the best-known songs that are essential to a list like this, we want to highlight the gender non-conforming musicians who earn a spotlight, too.

“I said I wanted to commence a new genre of music,” Jojo Siwa told Billboard News. “It’s called ‘gay pop'”. Someone please say Jojo that she’s a little too late–“gay pop” has existed for decades and has had a princess for over a year: her majesty, Chappell Roan. Born and raised in Willard, Missouri, Roan debuted on YouTube with a song titled “Die Young” at seventeen. She was signed to Atlantic Records in 2017, but this deal only lasted 3 years before she was dropped in 2020. In the fall of 2020, Roan allowed herself one more shot and moved out to LA. After a night at the iconic gay bar, The Abbey, Roan’s path as an artist was permanently altered. “All of a sudden I realized I could truly be any way I wanted to be, and no one would bat an eye,” she said to Headliner Magazine. “The Rise and Collapse of a Midwest Princess” is Roan’s debut album and came out in late 2023. It is her ode to gay culture, love, nightlife, and evolution. In an interview with Vulture Magazine, Roan said “What I started doing was stop trying to impress the tune industry and start trying to impress gay people,” whi This essay first showed up on Medium on the 28th of January. El chided me for not posting it on Eruditorum Press, so I kept an eye out for an opportunity to repost it. With the Oscars coming up and likely to reward this piece of trash for being the toxic garbage it is, I figured pushing my take into the limelight would be a fine move. Given that I’m compeltely satisfied with the essay (something you’ll never hear me utter about my work), I’ve chosen to not edit it at all and am presenting the piece as it initially appeared. With that in soul, here is me getting extremely pissed off at Bohemian Rhapsody. While we’re here, my Patreon has made a reasonably successful debut. If you love this essay, reflect on checking it out. It’s probably pointless to write about Bohemian Rhapsody months after its free. Everyone has decided how they sense about it by this point. Numerous intelligent thinkpieces have been written about this film already. The long-term critical and popular consensus on it has already been decided. One more review in the mix as Bohemian Rhapsody is
